In Module 1, participants will develop a strong foundational understanding of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). This includes exploring what AAC is, the various types, from natural gestures and sign language to advanced devices. Learners will also examine how AAC supports communication development and social inclusion, while challenging common myths and emphasizing neurodiversity-affirming care. The module concludes with an overview of effective AAC assessment and planning strategies.
Module 2 offers a practical dive into AAC tools and techniques. Participants will gain insight into how different disabilities impact communication needs and learn to tailor AAC supports accordingly. The module covers high-tech and low-tech AAC options, including a detailed look at the Avaz AAC app and its customization features. Additionally, learners will explore strategies to support users with low vision and Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI), and understand the applications of eye gaze technology. An interactive Q&A with AAC professionals provides an opportunity to deepen understanding through real-world examples.
Module 3 features a dynamic panel discussion, bringing together AAC users, parents, and professionals to share their lived experiences and perspectives. This session highlights the challenges and successes in AAC customization and daily use, emphasizing collaboration between users, families, and therapists for meaningful communication. The discussion also addresses stigma and misconceptions around AAC and neurodiversity, while offering practical advice for caregivers and educators. The module concludes with an open Q&A, allowing participants to engage directly with panelists.
